THE family of the late boxer described Dingaan Thobela as a hero.
This was during his memorial service, which was held at Hill on Empire, Empire Road, in Park Town, Joburg. The boxer died on Monday, 29 April.
Thobela was popularly known as The Rose Of Soweto and won many titles in the 90s.
He was celebrated by many of his friends and colleagues who worked with him back in his days as a boxer. Winnie Khumalo together with Dingaan's children danced and sang for him.
Bongane Thobela said his brother was not afraid to start something, and that's how he knew he was an extraordinary individual.
"I am grateful that he was a great brother. We shared shoes and names as well.
"I remember us going to Durban with some of his friends. We had fun, and he loved his work so much," he said.
David Thozamile Jonas said Dingaan was lovable and gave everyone around him love and respect.
"He was a loving man and always in good books. I will always remember him for all the great memories we created together," David said.
He said he would miss him for who he was and how he handled things. He was a person who loved reading a lot. He was very smart and loved reading novels a lot.
"He also loved to be in the space of biking. He would rush out of class every time the school was out," he said.
David said they managed to follow him, but he was always rushing to go to boxing classes in Joburg.
Dingaan Thobela's trainer, Norman Hlabane, said he did not love to fight in the streets.
"I took Dingaan as a young man. I trained him to be the best boxer he was.
"He was always ready to show his skills and work his way up. I never thought I would stand here for him," Norman said.
Dingaan will be buried on Thursday, 9 May. The funeral service will be held at the Dlamini Multipurpose Hall, Soweto.
