THE South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) said it doesn't tolerate any acts of gender-based violence.

The SABC was responding to recent incidents where Lesedi FM presenter Nkunyana Nkunyana allegedly assaulted his wife and was acquitted in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Thursday, 2 May.

SABC Acting Group Executive Corporate Affairs and Marketing, Mmoni Seapolelo said the public broadcaster plays a crucial role in empowering citizens with valuable information and raising awareness regarding various social ills, including gender-based violence.

"In this regard, SABC employees and Independent Contractors are encouraged not to be involved or participate in acts that contradict the SABC's firm position on gender-based violence.

"In a case in which an employee is involved, the SABC allows law enforcement authorities to address the matter. Following that process, the employer uses its discretion in line with the relevant policies to further determine its relationship with the affected employee," she said.

Seapolelo didn't mention when DJ Skuzabell will be back on air after he has been acquitted.

In an interview with Daily Sun, Nkunyana's wife Thakane Ramakau said her unemployment conditions allegedly forced her to drop the charges against her husband.

"We didn't reunite with my husband. He's still residing in his new apartment with his girlfriend. The fact that he was scheduled at Lesedi FM for a couple of weeks has negatively impacted our children financially. I'm struggling to buy food and run other necessary errands for our daily life. I'm an unemployed woman, raising our three boys," she said.

NPA Acting Spokesman Mojalefa Senokoatsane said Nkunyana made a representation to the office of the Senior Public Prosecutor through his advocate to request adult diversion.

"The victim requested that the charges be withdrawn against her husband. Having considered all merits of the case, taking into account reasons advanced by both parties, the matter was mediated, charges withdrawn against the accused on condition that the accused successfully attends and completes an adult diversion programme," he said.
