SWIFT police action led to the arrest of a suspect accused of shooting and killing a taxi boss.

The chairman of the Meter Taxi Association was gunned down in Tshwane Central on Tuesday, 30 April, in the evening.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo said the 30-year-old suspect was arrested immediately after the incident.

He was found in possession of a firearm believed to have been used in the crime.

"Members from the Rapid Rail Police Unit were at Pretoria Railway Station when they heard gunshots. They quickly rushed to the scene and noticed a man carrying a firearm running towards the CBD. When asked to stop, the suspect fired shots at the police, and the police responded by shooting back. The suspect was shot and injured before he was arrested," Masondo said.

He added that the police discovered a firearm and ammunition in the suspect's possession.

"Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, from Inanda in KZN, had just shot and killed a meter taxi owner. The victim was declared dead at the scene. The suspect, who is now in hospital under police guard, will face murder and possession of an unlicenced firearm charges."

The investigation is ongoing to determine if the suspect is connected to other crimes, especially those related to taxi violence.

Masondo mentioned that the suspect is expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrates Court as soon as he is discharged from hospital.
