THE people danced to the rhythm of traditional songs in the church, then listened to a lecture by a non-churchgoer on Sunday afternoon.
Dr Nokuzola Mdende, an African liberation academic, criticised the congregation for destroying the African religion.
“Some churchgoers worship by eating meat at the kraal on Friday and take part in Holy Communion on Sunday. You can’t do both,” she said.
“You must choose between a church and the African religion.”
Mdende was speaking at the Uniting Presbyterian Church of Southern Africa in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage, Eastern Cape.
She said she does not attend church but worships by reciting her ancestors’ names.
The founder of Icamagu Ngokwamoya organisation believes Christianity comes from Western culture and African people should stay away from it.
“If you say Sunday is a holy day, it means Monday is less holy. We believe no day is holier than another,” she said.
The doctor said a Methodist bishop once invited her to church and asked how many followers her African religion had.
“I asked the men in the church what they would do if they discovered they had peed in their blankets while they were asleep.
“Were they going to seek help from Jesus, the doctor or would they go to the kraal?” she said.
“Almost all the men lifted their hands, saying they would go to the kraal. And that’s when I told the bishop all the men who lifted their hands were my followers.”
After the doctor’s lecture, Reverend Mkhuseli Bashman closed the event with prayer, but Mdende kept her eyes open the entire time.
