PEOPLE reacted with anger to Penny Sparrow’s racist comments on social media over the weekend.
On Saturday the KZN estate agent referred to black people as monkeys on Facebook.
The EFF was quick to react. Spokesman Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said: “What is most concerning is many people reacting to these recent instances of public racism on Facebook have been the first to silence those who fight and seek to expose white supremacy in our country.”
Sparrow wrote: “These monkeys allowed to be released on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day on to public beaches obviously have no education. To allow them loose is inviting huge dirt and troubles and discomfort to others.”
She added salt to the wound yesterday when Metro FM’s Phat Joe interviewed her. She was heard calling the station “black people’s radio” and went on to tell the DJ she couldn’t believe he was black because he spoke English so well.
She also said there were cute monkeys she often fed peanuts to.
The DA said it had laid a charge of crimen injuria against Sparrow.
When contacted, her daughter Charmaine Cowrie said her mother was on her way to a police station because she feared for her life. “I asked her what she was thinking and she just said she didn’t mean anything by it and didn’t understand what all the fuss is about. She is diabetic and got very sick over all this,” she said.
Sparrow is believed to have booked herself into hospital.
Meanwhile, someone named Justin Van Vuuren also got into hot water after supporting her online and calling black people monkeys with 14 children.
He later posted an apology, which was received with even more anger.
