THE Hawks have called for the public to assist with any information relating to the multi-million rand armed robbery at OR Tambo International Airport last night.

"This is a serious matter and, as the Hawks, we will put out all stops to uncover the truth behind this weird robbery," Lieutenant General Mthandazo Ntlemeza said in a statement today.

The airport is a National Key point and its safety is of paramount importance, he said.

High placed sources told News24 that people in a marked police vehicle intercepted an amount equal to R24 million after an SAA flight landed at the airport. The vehicle is believed to have gained access through the airport's parking bay.

The vehicle was later found with several empty boxes which held the cash. The money was destined for the UK, the source said.

Hawks spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi declined to comment on the information.

He said that Ntlemeza had established a task team to investigate the case.

"Unfortunately, that's all the information we can reveal at the moment.''

Airports Company South Africa spokesperson Trevor Jones also confirmed on Tuesday that there had been a robbery, but he could not confirm the amount of money stolen.

No flights were affected.

Members of the public can contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 with any information.
