CHAOS erupted on Thursday, 2 May, after a teacher and a pupil were caught in a physical altercation at Glenvista High School in Joburg.

The incident, which quickly spread across social media, has prompted an investigation by the Gauteng Department of Education.

Steve Mabona, spokesman for the Gauteng Department of Education, expressed the department's concern.

"The Gauteng MEC of Education, Matome Chiloane, is alarmed by an incident that became widely shared online on Friday, 3 May 2024. A teacher and a grade 9 learner at Glenvista High School in Joburg were seen fighting in class," he stated.

The fight, captured in a video that has amassed over 379,000 views, shows the teacher and the pupil exchanging blows before the teacher is knocked to the ground. Within moments, the teacher rises, chases the pupil, and throws a chair at him, all while other pupils attempt to intervene.

Chiloane has voiced his concern over the incident and condemned the lack of discipline.

"We are taking this incident very seriously. Ensuring the safety of everyone at the school is our utmost priority. However, we will not stand for such indiscipline. Schools are meant for learning, not for such unacceptable behavior. We are investigating the incident thoroughly and will take decisive action based on our findings," he remarked.

This incident is not the first controversy for Glenvista High School. In 2021, six pupils were disciplined for allegedly setting fire to the school's auditorium, reportedly to avoid an assessment.
