FORMER ANC deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe has weighed in on former president Jacob Zuma’s party, uMkhonto Wesizwe (MK).

"All individuals and leaders write their history by the choices they make, and Zuma has made his. He has written his own history that way," he said.

Motlanthe spoke during the ANC campaign trail in Diepkloof, Soweto, on Friday, 3 May.

According to Motlanthe, the ANC has internal processes and procedures based on its constitution to address disciplinary action taken against Zuma.

"And so, to the extent that the former president claims that he is still a member of the ANC, we have heard some people claim their blood is black, green, and gold. So, they will remain ANC forever, but life doesn't work that way. They make certain choices at a particular time.

"Zuma has also made his choices, and the organisation has to ensure that it follows proper procedures because, in all cases of ill-discipline, there are two standards to measure fairness," he said.

Motlanthe said the first is to form a substantive case against the individual, and the second is whether you followed fair procedures.

He also addressed his 2017 statement suggesting that the ANC should lose the elections as it fails to listen to the cries of the people.

Motlanthe said there was no contradiction to his statement, and people needed to understand the context.

"At the particular time in 2017, I did make a point that the ANC has lost the ability to hear the cries and criticism of its followers, and perhaps those cries would be heard if the ANC were to lose the elections.

"It wasn’t a prediction but rather a plea to the leadership of the ANC to open up their ear and hear the cries of the people. That's all that it was," he said.

When asked about the rumours that the ANC party’s candidate list was tampered with, Motlanthe said he does not know what they are referring to because all he knows is that on the uploading of the list, some omissions were made at the last minute.

"That was raised with the electoral committee, and we worked out corrective measures, which we shared with the leadership of the ANC and the officials, to be specific, and that is the matter that is being attended to as far as I know," he said.
