EFF president Julius Malema said residents of Bushbuckridge in Mpumalanga are living a worse life than prisoners.

He was addressing residents of Ward 13 in Casteel on Tuesday, 7 May.

Bushbuckridge is known to be an ANC stronghold in the province. Last year, the EFF lost the ward to the ANC during by-elections.

Malema said 30 years into democracy, the governing party has failed the people of Bushbuckridge.

He said residents of the area are yet to enjoy the fruits of democracy.

"We're going to build you proper houses, not match boxes. Each house will have a kitchen, dining room, and a flushing toilet. There's no single white person who doesn't have a flushing toilet, but black people have built RDP houses with pit toilets

"The current government would never do that to white people, but they're doing it to you [referring to blacks] because they treat you like animals," Malema said.

"In prisons, prisoners can flush, you're not convicts but you can't flush. Prisoners have running water, yet you have to share water with animals in the rivers. Prisoners have electricity and don't have load shedding. You're living worse than prisoners."

Malema said people without flushing toilets must be the first to stand up and say, "The ANC treated us like animals.

"How can they do that to us? We'll show them who we are on Wednesday, 29 May. Why go to a voting station, with no flushing toilets and vote for the same people who made you not to have a flushing toilet for 30 years?" he asked.

Malema said when the EFF takes over the government, they'll give residents of Bushbuckridge water and demonstrate to the whole of South Africa that it's possible to get water as well as proper housing, jobs and the land.

He urged residents to leave everything and vote for the party to experience real freedom. Malema's campaign trail will continue throughout the week.

An elderly resident told Daily Sun they have been struggling for years to get what they were promised in 1994.

She said the EFF is their last hope to enjoy the fruits of democracy.

Another gogo said she was ready to cast her vote for a government that will take care of its people.
