The true value of Mamelodi Sundowns’ dominance of the domestic league is reflected in that their success now measures up to what has only been done by the heavyweights in the tops on the continent.

That Sundowns will be crowned as the 2023/24 champions of the DStv Premiership is now beyond argument and just a matter of when.

The Brazilians will be confirmed as champions without kicking a ball on Wednesday if Stellenbosch FC lose to Golden Arrows.

That will mean Kaizer Chiefs become the first club to give Sundowns a guard of honour when the two clubs meet on Thursday evening at FNB Stadium.

Alternatively, should Stellies win on Wednesday, then the Chloorkop-based outfit can do the job themselves against Chiefs, which is what the Yellow Nation will prefer.

The addition of the latest league title will push them to what has only ever been done by Al Ahly and Esperance in the top five leagues on the continent.

This is seven consecutive league titles.

Al Ahly have twice won the Egyptian Premier League seven years in a row.

The first was from season 1993/94 to 1999/00.

They repeated the same feat from 2004/05 through to the 2010/11 season.

Percy Tau’s club are by far the most successful in Egypt and on the continent with 11 Champions League titles.

The Egyptian giants will play Esperance in this year’s Champions League final in May.

Esperance won the Tunisian Professional League 1 title (Championnat de la Ligue Professionnelle) seven times in a row from the 1997/98 season up to the 2003/04 campaign.

The Tunisians – who knocked out Sindowns in the CAF Champions League semi-finals – recently held on to the title for six consecutive years until they surrendered it to Etoile du Sahel last season.

Just like Sundowns in South Africa, Esperance is by far the dominant club in Tunisian football.

Of note in the top 10 ranked leagues on the continent is that this feat of seven in a row has only been done by Cote d’Ivoire’s ASEC Mimosas.

They won Ligue 1 from 2001 to 2006.

Raja Casablanca came stuck at six in a row in Morocco’s Botola Pro League after lifting the title from 1995/96 to 2000/01.
