A METRO cop is in hot water over a bribe.

The Joburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) cop was bust by the department's internal affairs unit on Wednesday, 7 February for extortion and corruption at Pelindaba and R552, Lanseria, after he allegedly extorted R800 from a motorist.

JMPD spokesman Superintendent Xolani Fihla said the matter was being treated with the utmost seriousness, and an internal investigation has also been initiated to address these allegations.

“Members of the public need to know that the department is committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and professionalism within our ranks. Corruption undermines the trust between law enforcement and the community we serve, and it has no place within the organisation,” said Fihla.

He said JMPD takes allegations of corruption very seriously and won't tolerate any form of misconduct by their officers.

The cooperation and support from the public in rooting out corruption is crucial in ensuring that our officers uphold the law and serve the public with integrity,” Fihla said.

The acting chief of police, Angie Mokasi condemned any form of corruption or misconduct by officials within the JMPD.
