THE EFF has spent over R750 000 on rent for the next five years at Nancefield Retirement Village in Eldorado Park.

They repaired the broken windows, ceiling, and geyser.

This after EFF leader Julius Malema committed to paying rent for the elderly residents during their campaign in the area two weeks ago.

Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi delivered proof of payments to cover five years' rent for over 40 elderly people at the retirement village on Tuesday, 30 April.

Gogo Issie Arends (75) said she has been living at the home for 16 years.

“This place was very peaceful, but as the years went by, unhappiness came. The place became corrupt. I thank God for the patience that I had. I lived without a geyser for three years," she said.

The elderly residents had expressed concerns about break-ins and the theft of laundry.

“You can’t leave your door open. If you do, those silly kids will steal everything, including bread in the cupboard,” said Issie.

Madala Reuben Mahlangu (78) told Daily Sun he has lived in the home for 23 years and has struggled to pay rent.

“When the statements come after paying, they would show that the price has increased. We didn’t understand why. I owed about R60 000. I’m grateful that the EFF has sorted out the issue,” he said.

Ndlozi said the president of the EFF was in Eldorado Park two weeks ago for a town hall meeting.

He said during a meeting with some elderly from the village, they committed to helping after hearing about the problems they encountered.

“Elderly people in villages shouldn’t be paying for water and electricity, they must be able to live in these villages for free. Their pension money should go to their livelihoods,” he said.

Ndlozi said they are not bribing the elderly for votes through this gesture.

“It’s impossible to buy a vote because a vote happens in secret and under fair conditions,” he said.
