A 10-year-old child from Orchards in Pretoria North was unable to partake in traditional ceremonies, including virginity tests, after her biological father allegedly raped her.

This emerged after her mum enrolled her in a traditional contest over the March 2024 school holidays, forcing her to inform her mum about what had been happening to her.

Speaking to Daily Sun at the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Thursday, May 2, the mum said her husband is a truck driver and is not always home.

"After my husband returned from his long trips, my daughter came home from school and started acting unusual; she called me to her room and started crying, saying to me that her father had been allegedly raping her," she said.

Furthermore, she added that it has been happening for the past three years and has threatened to kill her if she told anybody.

"I got to understand why she's been reluctant to join the traditional group. I was horrified but had to protect her by encouraging her to remain silent and pretending everything was normal," she said.

She said when the husband started panicking, she asked him to accompany to her to the garage and confronted him.

"When I said I'd get her to the doctor to get her checked, he confessed and apologized, saying it was a demon that got to him, he's sorry and that he'll hand himself to the cops," adding that when they arrived at the police station, he stopped cooperating and fled to his family in Swaziland.

Following his arrest, his 22-year-old daughter, who is from another woman, started speaking out about him also raping her before filing a rape charge, which was added to his statutory rape charge.

His first bail application was made on Thursday, April 25, and he failed to attend court after his arrest on Sunday, April 21.

The investigating officer, Sergeant Ignatious Mailula was cross-examined by both the prosecutor and the state, and the case was set for arguments on Wednesday, May 8.
