UNFINISHED RDP houses in the North West are a big worry.

Villagers from Ledig, Rustenburg, are calling on the government to address the issue of these RDPs.

Residents have expressed their desire to move into these houses, which have been left incomplete for about a decade.

Many of these houses don't have roofs, windows, doors, and proper flooring. Some are only partially built, with just the foundation in place.

A beneficiary from Ledig, Rosemary Sokhela, shared that her family had no choice but to occupy their incomplete home.

"We couldn't stay in the shack because the conditions of it were extremely bad," she said.

Her family, consisting of 11 members, struggled in their one-room shack, especially during cold and rainy conditions.

"We're hoping that the government will finish the project. It's our only hope for better living conditions," said Rosemary.

Another villager, Mogomotsi Noko, said that not a single house had been completed. He called on the government to address these challenges and improve service delivery.

"How are we supposed to vote for the same government that doesn't take its people seriously?" he said.

Head of communications at Moses Kotane Municipality, Berlina Lekgethwane, said the distribution of RDP houses is an annual task handled by the provincial Department of Human Settlements.

She acknowledged the delays in Ledig and other areas, attributing them to various factors, including the Covid-19 pandemic and labour forums.

"The Department of Human Settlement has appointed a developer to address the backlog of RDP houses, including those in Ledig," Lekgethwane said.

The developer was introduced to the municipality on 16 April 2024.

Human settlements spokeswoman Dineo Lolokwane emphasised the integrated approach to housing projects across the province.

She acknowledged the delays, attributing them to budget cuts and other challenges. However, she said a developer has been appointed to complete the outstanding work.
