Weekend wrap-up: Here's what you missed!

THIS past weekend saw devastating news being published on Daily Sun, with many mourning the deaths of their loved ones.

Friends and family members gathered in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain, on Saturday, 20 April to bid farewell to the late Kaizer Chiefs star Luke Fleurs.

The football star was shot and killed on 3 April in a botched hijacking incident while at a petrol station in Florida, Joburg at about 8.30pm.

On the day of the funeral, mourners gathered at the family home in Westridge before moving to the New Apostolic Church in Tafelsig, where a funeral service was held.

Luke's father, Theodore Fleurs, told Daily Sun they decided not to bury their son in the traditional way after they took the decision to cremate him.

Staying on your funerals, comedian and content creator Kagiso Pope Ramoshai was laid to rest on Saturday, 20 April.

The 28-year-old funnyman was buried in his hometown of Mankweng, Limpopo, at the family's Ramoshi Cemetery.

Among those who attended the funeral were Limpopo stars such as King Monada, Kwenisto, Mphoza Mashabela, Matome Rapetsoa, Janisto, Rose Letsoalo, and his girlfriend Pearl Mnisi.

Tragedies continue to rain on the country. This as Mzansi lost two legends this past weekend. This includes Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC)  former leader and struggle stalwart, Dr Motsoko Pheko.

The struggle hero, renowned lawyer, author and historian died on Friday, 19 April at the age of 93.His death was confirmed by his family in a statement on Saturday, 20 April.

Another passing that rocked the nation was that of comedian and R&B DJ Peter "Mashata" Mabuse, who was shot dead in the early hours of Sunday, 21 April, in Soshanguve, Tshwane.


The motive for the shooting is still unclear, but police spokeswoman Colonel Noxolo Kweza confirmed the incident.

It's believed that Mashata, who was with another victim who survived, were attacked while driving near the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in Soshanguve

In other news, five senior Tshwane officials were found guilty in the controversial tender case involving the Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Plant. They have since been placed on precautionary suspension. 

The tender was previously associated with a company linked to corruption-accused businessman, Edwin Sodi.

Staying on national news, Minister of Police Bheki Cele made headlines once again after his visit to Gugulethu in Western Cape, which is prone to violence and criminality.

Cele upon addressing residents during the imbizo noted with concern organised crimes that have become dominant in the area - many of which are instigated by prisoners.

Cele said they are hot on the heels of these criminals but will also foster a safe community for those living in Gugluethu. The solutions announced were the deployment of an extra 83 police officers and 36 vehicles in Cape Town.

Also on national news, Higher Education, Science and Innovation Minister Blade Nzimande has criticised unregistered higher education institutions for awarding honorary doctorates to individuals.

This after legendary actor and performer Sello Maake kaNcube shared photos of himself on his social media pages after he was allegedly awarded an honorary doctorate by a certain institution on Saturday, 20 April.

And finally in your politics news,  as the country gears up for the general election on 29 May, politicians are in every part of the country to solidify their footprint in the lives of voters.

On Saturday, 20 April, the Democratic Alliance (DA) announced its plans to reduce crime within a single term if voted into power.

Meanwhile, EFF leader Julius Malema appealed to residents of Laudium in Tshwane to share with the poor, like people who are living in the surrounding areas like Itereleng informal settlement and Atteridgeville.
